MiKe Morris - - singer/songwriter/guitarist/improv artist

Heather MiKe - - fiddle (and the occasional harmony vocal)

Acoustic music with a groove. Progressive Folk. Heavy Wood.

MiKe & MiKe is a guitar and fiddle duo that combines contemporary folk and rock music with that of traditional high-energy fiddling. Drawing from a wide range of influences, from Celtic and Cape Breton fiddle tunes to percussive blues and modern acoustic guitar styles, MiKe & MiKe possess a distinctive sound that sets them apart from most acoustic duos. Their music has been called “funky acoustic folk” (Indieville.com), and “energetic, up-tempo and uplifting” (The Manchester Union Leader).

Mike Morris is a full-time performer and was recently chosen (2006) as a Spotlight Awards Nominee in the Best Singer-Songwriter category. Heather Mike currently teaches private violin and fiddle lessons. As MiKe & MiKe, they are regular performers at NH contra dances, farmer’s markets, festivals, weddings and clubs.
MIKE MORRIS
Mike Morris defies the stereotype of the solo acoustic musician. With bluesy vocals and bass-heavy guitar playing, his sound moves effortlessly from folk and blues to rock and rap.  With a distinctive percussive style that sets him apart from other artists, Mike turns the guitar into a kick drum, using slaps, pops and harmonics in a way few performers do. “The acoustic guitar is an incredibly expressive instrument,” he says, “and yet there’s something so simple about it.  The electric guitar may have changed the world, but the acoustic guitar keeps it turning. “

Originally from El Paso, TX, Mike hails from the “Live Free or Die” state of NH.  He picked up a guitar in his twenties, after dabbling in piano and trumpet as a kid.  His first recording, “What Have I Done?” was released in January 2006, and his follow-up recording will be released later this year.  As any who have seen Mike Morris perform know, it his live show that truly showcases his talents.  His sense of humor and improvisational skills make Mike Morris a true original.  “I’d like every night to be something new.  I’d like people to go home feeling better than when they walked in.  If we can share a song and a laugh towards that end, I’m a happy man.”
“An energy-charged frenzy of guitar, fiddle, songwriting and wit.”
-- Scott Hayward, owner and talent buyer, Tupelo Music Hall

“Loved your style and voice and percussive, toe-stamping, butt-wiggling music. Heather [is] such a great addition to your act.”

HEATHER MIKE
Heather Mike has been playing the violin for almost 30 years.  Raised in Lansing, MI, Heather received her classical training through the Suzuki Program at Michigan State University.  She performed solo, in quartets, chamber ensembles, and orchestras through her first year at the University of New Hampshire.  While earning a degree in Zoology, Heather set the violin aside for a few years before making the transition to fiddle.

For the past ten years, Heather has been engrossed in contra dance music, bluegrass, and the art of improvisational fiddle.  She has performed with contra dance bands in Monterey, California and throughout New Hampshire.  Heather spent three years with the bluegrass band, American Flyer, and two years with Rockspring, a four piece acoustic string band.

Heather has eleven years experience teaching classical violin and fiddle.  She currently teaches from her home studio in Strafford, NH.  “Teaching students as young as 2 years old, as well as adults of all ages and abilities, drives me to constantly think creatively.  Everyone learns differently.  You need to be able to demonstrate each skill, break it down into the smallest possible units, and describe each step in multiple ways, from all points of view.  Patience, ‘thinking outside the box’, and enthusiasm for what you are teaching are vital in an effective and successful teacher.”
